Directed by Jonathan Demme, The Agronomist is the most moving and intelligent documentary of the festival. It is about Jean Dominique, a Haitian campaigner for press freedom.  Trained as an agronomist- hence the title- this courageous journalist of Radio Haiti Inter sought tirelessly to provide his people with free access to information. Dominque progressively broadcasted news in French and Creole during the nightmare years of Papa and Baby Doc- as well as during the rule of left-wing populist preacher Jean Bertrand. Indeed, Demme gives us, in The Agronomist, a portrait of a true democrat. Ultimately killed for his noble cause, Dominique is a genuine hero. Demmes directorial presence is unobtrusive but he has paradoxically made an absolutely personal political film. Through a series of interviews over ten years, he lets the journalist speak for himself. In this brief but riveting history of modern Haiti, Demme also does not hesitate to highlight the interfering role of the United States- particularly the Reagan and Clinton administrations- in the domestic politics in Haiti. Reflecting the intelligence and political commitment of its subject, The Agronomist is at once poignant and inspiring lucid and objective work.
